Do not hold this fact against them. I have had longer to hone my skills.
( we're talking centuries here... )
Very. I would say it is my preference in armed combat, though I know how to wield a bow as well. I take it that is your preference as well. Longsword, or sword and shield?
I have trained all of my life, but I don't think I can match your speed.
[Not that he knows how long it has taken her.]
I'm familiar with a bow, but a sword is where I am strongest. I can use a shield, but it can be bulky and slow me down. Just using my sword lets me weave and defend myself better. I tend to use my bastard sword.
That was with a dragon at my back. You have to fly fast.
[He won't confirm or deny his modesty, his humility had long ago replaced the childish petulance he once had at the Wall. There was no more talk about "being the best". He had seen how many others could best him and how little his skills mattered against a larger army.]
You're in Olympia or Wyver? I usually train at the palace in Olympia, along with the other royal guards. If you're in Wyver though, I can come to you.
( Diana is not an arrogant creature by any means, but she has never been shy to admit what she is capable of. there is nothing arrogant in knowing one's own strength. to know ones strengths was to know ones weaknesses. )
Olympia. I am also a member of the guard. Perhaps we could use the grounds for our practice.
[How did he miss that she was one of the guards? It was a perfect match for her, given her skill and strength. If she had said she was doing something else, he likely would have brought this up anyway.]
That is where I go every morning. Where did they put you for patrol?
( which is a high priority area, she supposes, though Diana honestly finds it a little quiet. )
It will serve us both, then. And if you ever have need of a second, let me know. I am permitted extra shifts as long as I attend to my assigned ones. I find the castle fairly quiet, I confess.
[Which ended up having a bigger crime ring than Jon first anticipated. After a few months, it was now a quiet and uneventful patrol.]
I would have thought they would place you in a more active area? [It would have been a better use of her skills.] I wouldn't mind the company. Not very much happens in the entertainment district, not since the attacks.
If things with Wyver increase, we might be facing more trouble.
I imagine they thought to prioritize the castle in case of danger, though I agree I might feel more useful in a more active area.
( she isn't the general and while she understands the thinking, strength on day to day concerns seemed a better priority than a rainy day concern of attack on the empress. )
That may be so. I do not understand why the cities war as they do. Perhaps understanding that might provide more insight on why tensions keep rising.
There is a chance that they don't know the real reason. Conflict like this begins for a number of reasons that are forgotten over time. It's only grievances that continue to build and build until it becomes a cycle.
[It's the only sense he can make of it and the wars of his world. He had seen this before and even he couldn't say anymore why so many House were still fighting before Westeros ended.]
I have been fighting for so long. I don't want part in a war that I don't believe. Unless there is something or someone I must protect, I'd rather rest.
[The Storm was different. He made a promise and he wouldn't break his word.]

[Which is not ironic at all.]

( granted, most people can run pretty fast when their life is in danger, but she still thinks he's being a little too modest. )
I favor something shorter, but I believe we shall be well matched. Name a place and an hour and I will meet you.

What will you do if they go to war?

( she'd need to better understand the bitterness between Wyver and Olympia to pick a side. as it is, neither seem blameless. )

We have a bit of time before we have to decide. Will I see you in the training yard soon?

You will. Tomorrow, perhaps?
